IRD Internships & Research Opportunities

Indian Resources Development is offering internships or research opportunities for any Native American students in colleges in New Mexico pursuing careers related to food, agriculture, natural resources, and human sciences. The internships or research opportunities will be paid and they include mentoring support and networking opportunities. To be considered, please email ird.nmsu@edu by March 31, 2023.

Job Openings

IRD has two positions open to help with administration and high school outreach. Learn more about these positions and apply before April 10^th.

The positions may be in one of the following Northern New Mexico counties: Rio Arriba (Alcalde), Santa Fe (Santa Fe or Española, Ohkay Owingeh or Pueblos of Nambe, Pojoaque, Tesuque, San Ildefonso, or Santa Clara), or McKinley (Gallup).

IRD Program Specialist Sr.

Plan and coordinate the development, implementation, and execution of the high school unit of Indian Resources Development with the objective of promoting, developing, and connecting Native American students in New Mexico with higher education and experiential learning opportunities in agriculture, natural resources, energy, business, engineering, and other areas of focus of IRD.

IRD Program Coordinator

Provides administrative and outreach support in the development, implementation, and marketing of program/project functions. Coordinates and helps schedule meetings, presentations, and projects. Takes part in the development of funding proposals for the program.

Support With Planning College Visits

For Tribal Education Departments

Looking for support to take students on college visits? Indian Resources Development can help. IRD believes that an important part of planning for college is being able to visit and learn more about college campuses. IRD is now offering support with funding and contact information to universities for Tribal Education Departments that wish to take students on college tours and visits. For more information please email ird@nmsu.edu.

ACES Open House

Saturday, April 1, 9 am - 12 pm
Free Admission | Free Parking

Indian Resources Development will be part of the fun at this year's Open House for the NMSU College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences (ACES). Learn more about what IRD offers, our services, and important facts about tribal nations. Other programs will also be there with fun for the whole family!

Visitors should start at the “Welcome” tent at 940 College Drive – the front yard of Gerald Thomas Hall.

NMDA Agricultural Workforce Development

Ag businesses and future farmers and ranchers:

The New Mexico Department of Agriculture through the Agricultural Workforce Development program offers to pay half the cost of hiring an intern for a minimum of 130 hours a year for agricultural businesses.

Interns need to be 18 years of age or older.

A Message From Our Dean

Thank you, readers and supporters of the IRD program,

I want to take this opportunity to thank the staff and director of the IRD program for all the hard work they have been doing over the past years since the program came back to the College of ACES. We are extremely proud of the work they are doing and how everything has been progressing.

The IRD program is extremely important for the college of ACES. It is integral to the goals of our college to serve all New Mexicans and reach out to all demographics within the state: IRD is an important component of this effort. These efforts include widening our demographics and improving access for Native Americans to attend the college and access the opportunities that the college offers.

We are also happy and proud that our work through IRD also includes attracting students to all higher education in the state of New Mexico, not just NMSU. The work that has been done has been steady, and we continue these efforts. It is very important to help all potential students identify optimal careers and programs for them.

This work in New Mexico is fundamental to us, and we want to continue completing the land grant mission of the college, which is teaching, research, and extension – IRD is critical to all of us.

Indian Resources Development (IRD) is a statewide program, in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at New Mexico State University. IRD offers educational and professional development opportunities for Native American students in high school and college; and supports tribal nations in New Mexico in advancing their economic development goals in agriculture, natural resources, engineering, energy, business, workforce development, and education.
